All Saints'

At St. Joseph’s we have allocated house groups. The house groups are named after Saints synonymous with the North of England. Each house group has children from every year group, from Nursery to Year 6 and is led by one of our teaching staff.

Our house groups foster a sense of belonging, kindness, teamwork and achievement for every child in school. Each term one of our house groups will lead the whole school in Celebration of the Word.

In Year 6 children put themselves forward for the role of Captain or Vice-Captain for their house group. The children make a statement of case why they should be given this role and are voted by their peers in the house group.

Children earn house points every day in school for good behaviour, kindness, following school rules, working hard in class, homework, spellings, excellent manners and politeness. Each week the house group with the most points is awarded the house trophy to display in the hall. At the end of the school year the children from the house with the points wins a special treat for their whole house group.

About our Saints

Saint Aidan:

He was an Irish Christian missionary and the founder and first Bishop of the monastery on the island of Lindisfarne (Holy Island). He lived in the 7th century and is remembered for his role in spreading Christinity in the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of Northumbria and Mercia. King Oswald (St. Oswald) asked Aidan to come to Northumbria to help with this conversion. Aidan was humble, courageous and compassionate and he often walked long distances to spread his faith and he was also know for this acts of charity. His feast day is on the 31st August.

Saint Matthew:

Saint Matthew, also know as Levi, was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ and the author of the Gospel of Matthew. According to the Bible he was a tax collector when Jesus asked him to become his disciple. His feast day, known as the Feast of Saint Matthew is celebrated on the 21st of September.

Saint Cuthbert:

Saint Cuthbert was a 7th century Anglo Saxon monk, bishop and hermit who was born in 634 AD. Cuthbert was bishop of Lindisfarne (Holy Island). He was known for spreading Christianity in the North of England. He is know for this piety and he was always humble. Saint Cuthbert’s tomb can be found in Durham Cathedral. His feast day is on the 20th March.

Saint Bede:

Saint Bede, also know known as Venerable Bede, was an English monk, historian and theologian. He lived in the early Middle Ages, from 672 AD to 735 AD. Bede was best know for writing his ‘Ecclesiastical History of the English People,’ that was very important for the early history of England. He wrote 40 books and had great wisdom. His feast day is celebrated on the 25th May.

Saint Mark:

Saint Mark, also know as John Mark, was an early Christian mentioned in the New Testament of the Bible. Mark was a disciple of Saint Peter and travelled with him. He is best know for being the author of St. Mark’s Gospel. His feast day is on the 25th April.

Saint Oswald:

Saint Oswald is known for his efforts to spread Christianity across Northumbrian. He was compassionate and generous, often giving food to the poor. He lived in 604 – 642 AD. His feast day is 29th February.
