Year 6

Get ready for an exciting adventure in Year 6 at St Joseph’s! This is our final year in primary school, and we’re determined to make it our best one yet. We work hard, dream big, and support each other every step of the way. Our class is led by Mrs J Kelly and Mrs S Kelly, with the fantastic Mrs Ward always on hand to help us shine.

Curriculum Overview

English This term we will be reading The Girl who stole an Elephant ; There’s a Ran-Tan in my bedroom; The boy at the back of the class; and The Arrival. We will complete a range of fiction and non-fiction writing including setting descriptions, narratives, balanced arguments and persuasive letters.   We will consolidate our use of higher-level punctuation including colons, semi-colons, brackets, dashes and hyphens. We will revise word classes and identify these in our reading and further develop our editing skills to improve cohesion, spelling and vocabulary choices. 
Maths  We will: Explore place value up to 10 000 000 Develop formal written methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions Calculate fractions of an amount Convert metric and imperial units Use ratio to solve problems

Reflection point

We celebrated our work so far in our Faith in Action with a Celebration of the Word: I am loved therefore I love. We reflected on all of the good things we have done during Autumn term and thought ahead to how we will follow in Jesus’ footsteps in the new year.

Faith in Action

As part of their Faith in Action, Year 6 have worked very hard to create these beautiful  Christmas cards to share with care homes and spread some Christmas joy in our local community.

Science

Our Year 6 pupils have been busy exploring the fascinating world of light. First, they designed their own investigation to demonstrate that light travels in straight lines. Building on this, they then used prisms and torches to uncover the hidden secret of white light—that it is actually made up of the full spectrum of colours!

It’s been wonderful to see their curiosity, teamwork, and scientific thinking in action. Well done, Year 6!

Christmas Cards

As part of their Faith in Action, Year 6 have been selling Christmas Cards. All money raised will be donated to the British Heart Foundation- a charity chosen by the Year 6 pupils.

Music

We have a new music teacher! Mrs Ingram has been teaching us about different instruments and if they belong to the percussion or string family. We have been learning to play different instruments and experimenting with different tempos, rhythms and dynamics. We have also learnt how to warm up our voices and how to project our voice when singing.

Derwent Hill

Year 6 had a fantastic time at Derwent Hill. They climbed mountains, tries gorge walking, did a night walk, explored caves and much much more.

Remembrance Day

Year 6 led us beautifully and respectfully in our Remembrance Day service.

Handball

In our P.E. lessons we have been learning the rules of handball and learning the necessary skills.

Anti-bullying workshop

We took part in an anti-bullying workshop where we looked at the different types of bullying and how people who are being bullied may feel.

House Group Captains and Vice Captains

We are thrilled to announce our new House Group Captains and Vice Captains for this year! They will be fantastic role models and leaders for your houses!

Basketball

Year 6 have been enjoying learning the skills necessary to play basketball.

Art

In our art lessons we are redesigning packaging for cereal boxes. We have created our own design for a brand.

The Rosary

As part of our Faith in Action, Year 6 are leading the whole school in Rosary at a Monday and Wednesday playtime during the month of October.

Spanish Day

Hola amigo! At St. Josephs’ we are now learning Spanish. We all wore red and yellow to celebrate we dedicated a day to learning all things Spain.

Number Day in Year 2

Year 2 had a fantastic Number Day! They took part in a number scavenger hunt; explored odd and even numbers; played Times Table Rockstars; designed a number day t-shirt and enjoyed a game of bingo.

Year 2 RE

In RE, Year 2 have been exploring the story of the Last Supper. After reading Luke’s Gospel, they retold the scripture through role play.

Year 1 Celebration of the Word

Year 1 participated in Celebration of the Word in their classroom. They talked about their homeless charity, Centrepoint and how they could help homeless people. The children added a donation and a warm coat to their focal point table.
